Democratic resilience, ancient foundations, modern relevance
The Phyle Project is a research initiative led by Markos & Eleni Kounalakis Chair in Honor of Constantine Mitsotakis, Professor of Political Science, and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution Josiah Ober, 2025 Balzan Prizewinner, dedicated to understanding how organized systems of citizen self-government withstand crisis, survive collapse, and rebuild.
Rooted in the historical example of the Athenian democratic restoration of 403 BCE, which began from the fortified site of Phyle, the project explores how institutional resilience, civic commitment, and collective action can sustain democracy across time.
Running from 2026–2028, the Phyle Project brings together early-career scholars to analyze ancient democratic experience and translate its lessons for contemporary political life.
